ONEFORSEVEN Scores World First
For the first time ever, three current Snooker World Champions will compete in the same event when the WPBSA, IBSF and WLBSA title holders meet on 21st December at the inaugural ONEFORSEVEN Wales tournament in Cardiff.
ONEFORSEVEN WALES has been created by leading snooker internet firm Global-Snooker.com and the format is predicted to change the face of traditional snooker, much like Twenty-20 has accomplished with cricket.
World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) Champ John Higgins is the bookies’ 3/1 pre-tournament favourite and is joined in the 16-player field by fellow world champions Alfie Burden and Reanne Evans.
Evans is the five-time World Ladies Billiards and Snooker [WLBSA] Champion, and has already scored ONEFORSEVEN qualifying wins over tour professionals Ian McCulloch and Fergal O’Brien.
Dudley-based Evans said “ONEFORSEVEN is a great format that makes it exciting for people to watch”. She added, “There is so much going on, and the leader-board can change so quickly.
I am looking forward to mixing it with the best players. I don’t get this kind of opportunity very often”.
Burden is fresh from his International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF) win in India last month, where he beat Brazil’s Igor Figuereido in the final to lift the title and secure a place on the World Snooker Pro Tour next season.
Burden, from Hatfield, told Global-snooker.com, “I am looking forward to playing in ONEFORSEVEN for the first time. I have heard lots about it and it sounds perfect for my style of play”.
ONEFORSEVEN WALES 2009 will see a select field of 16 players compete against each other in a cumulative points competition at Cardiff’s Welsh Institute of Sport, with the eventual winner pocketing a lucrative cash prize of £14,707.
