• Maguire is Magic at PTC

Scotland’s Stephen Maguire fired in a top break of 140 in winning three matches on the way to the last 16 of the second Star Xing Pai Players Tour Championship in Sheffield.

The world number six comfortably saw off the challenge of Greg Davis, the teenage son of six times world champion Steve in the opening round, before facing another teenager, Mitchell Mann.

Birmingham’s Mann caused a shock in the opening event in the PTC last month by beating 2005 world champion, Shaun Murphy.

It all looked comfortable for Maguire as he opened a three-frames-to-nil lead.  He should have won the next but after stealing it on the final black, Mann took the next two and set up a deciding frame shoot-out.

It was the former UK champion who showed his class, making a frame and match winning break of 68.

Maguire, who reached the final of the first event in this new series, faced Wales’ Daniel Wells.

There was to be no such trouble for Maguire as he cruised to a comfortable win including breaks of 140, 68 and 56 to set up a last 16 match on Sunday against fellow Scot, teenager Anthony McGill.
