• Whirwind’s 30 Not-Out

Hats off to Jimmy White, as he breaks off his 30th world championship campaign at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport tomorrow against little known Scot, Mark Boyle.

The Whirlwind has made the annual pilgrimage to Sheffield in search of snooker’s Holy Grail since 1981, when he was beaten by a certain, Steve Davis.

His efforts start slightly earlier than they used to in his hey day, when he reached six finals at The Crucible and made only the second ever Crucible 147.

Stephen Hendry proved to be White’s nemesis winning four finals in a row against and forcing the immortal words, “He is starting to annoy me now” the popular Londoner after the 1994 final frame decider.

White is arguably the most popular player of all time and still has an army of fans willing him to win that elusive title.

If he manages to overcome the challenge of Scotland’s Boyle, he will face a tough test against a resurgent Ken Doherty before taking on Joe Swail for a place on snooker’s biggest stage.

Irespective of results, Global-Snooker.com salutes White's achievement of competing across four decades.
