• End of the Lines for Williams

Wales’ Mark Williams reached the end of the line in the Pukka Pies UK Championship in Telford when he was beaten in a final frame shoot-out by Peter Lines.

Lines, from Leeds turned professional in 1991 but has never fulfilled the potential that has made him one of the most feared opponents on the pro-am circuit.

He has been on and off the Tour in recent years, and reaching the quarter-final of the UK Championship is by far his greatest achievement on the table to date.

It was nip-and-tuck all the way through the final session after Lines had wiped out Williams’ two-frame mid-session advantage.

He took the lead at 6-5 and 7-6 before the Welshman won two in a row to lead by one with two to play.

Lines managed to hold his nerve and win the last two on the black and secure a famous win.

Next up for him will be Stephen Maguire, who eased past Stuart Bingham in his last 16 match.

The Scot was consistent if not brilliant, with the highlight being a century break in frame ten.
