• Clegg Goes For Maximum Support at The Crucible

With less than a week to go before the nation goes to the polls in the General Election, Liberal Democrat leader and MP for Sheffield, Nick Clegg dropped in on The Crucible Theatre.

A ‘break’ in the snooker proceedings allowed Mr Clegg the opportunity to grace snooker’s centre stage and address the crowds.

He was given a mixed reception by the Crucible faithful but was especially pleased to confirm that snooker and Sheffield will be forging an even stronger relationship in the coming years.

The Liberal Democrat leader joked about Gordon Brown's "bigoted woman" slip on Wednesday: "I know everyone has been talking about one gaffe all week - the fact that Steve Davis got to the quarter-finals," he said.

"I thought I'd come and crack a few snooker jokes like the reds are sunk or Labour are snookered but then I realised the blue ball was worth more than the yellow so I had better not."

Mr. Clegg also hailed tournament sponsor Betfred.com for backing the tournament and charity Killing Cancer.

At one point the he was challenged by an audience member who shouted "let's see you play", Mr Clegg refused the offer and handed back to the snooker announcing, "Let the best player win".
