• Brecel Honoured in Belgium

    Award ceremony season is in full swing and although only a brief glimpse of the green baize was seen on BBC Sports Personality of the Year on Sunday, on the continent one of the sport’s rising stars was honoured.

    The Belgian Press voted 15-year-old, Luca Brecel Most Promising Talent at their annual Sports Gala in Ostend.

    Brecel won acclaim after becoming the youngest ever Belgian and European Champion earlier this year, and won by an overwhelming majority ahead of Track & Field’ athlete Jerome D’Hoedt and Judo’s Lola Mansour.

    This is time that the award has been won by a snooker players and his father Carlo spoke on behalf of the youngster after the ceremony, saying "This is a tremendous honour"

    “It is a big surprise as Snooker is not a big sport in Belgium. This is a unique achievement for our sport and we are very moved. "

    Brecel succeeds footballer last year’s winner Romelu Lukaku, Anderlecht striker and follows in the footsteps of the likes of tennis star Kim Clijsters, who won the award in 1998 and was voted 2010 Sportswoman of the Year.
