• Ireland to host 6 Reds Snooker World Championship

The Destination Killarney Group has announced the launch of the inaugural 6 Red World Championships which will take place from 15-18 December 2009 in the INEC Arena in Killarney, Ireland.

The Destination Killarney Group, operators of the INEC, The Gleneagle Hotel & The Brehon Killarney and in association with Cue Club Events and former World Champion Ken Doherty are joint hosts of the 6 Reds World Championships.

The event builds on the growing interest in 6 Red Snooker around the world and the success of the World Grand Prix in Thailand over the last two years.

6 Red Snooker is a relatively new discipline in snooker, It retains all the rules of snooker, but with only 6 reds on the table can be played with an average frame time of 6-8 minutes at professional leve, making it exciting for the players and public alike.

Ken Doherty, one of the Event partners, commented "The speed and unpredictability of the games makes it far more exciting and the format can be a great leveller with the maximum break of 75 being far more attainable than the traditional 147 .

"I'm really looking forward to this event and every player I've spoken to wants to take part. We've had enquiries from players as far apart as Eastern Europe to Eastern Asia and the Middle East."

The four day event carries a prize fund of over 35,000 Euro.

The format will be split up into two days of group game matches which will include a staggering 320 matches in all played on 16 championship tables.

The final two days will see the field whittled down from the Last 64 to the final with the final days play broadcast live on TV.

The event itself will take place in the Home of Irish Snooker, the INEC Killarney which successfully hosted the World Series of Snooker Event back in May 2009.

It is anticipated that 160 players from all corners of the world will compete in an initial group stage format with all 96 Main Tour professional players invited to take part. The current feedback from noth Main Tour players and international players is very positive  and a huge entry from the professional ranks and around the world is expected.

This World Championships will be a rare opportunity for the world's top amateurs to compete alongside the professionals for the title of the 2009 6 Red World Champion.

An official web site at www.6redworldchampionships.com will be going live soon and will keep everyone up to date regarding entry into this event. At present players and spectators requiring further information can email info@6redworldchampionships.com.

Global Snooker will be covering this event live in December

To enable as many spectators as possible to attend and witness the fast and furious action of 6 Red Snooker the event will be free entry for the first three days with entry into the final day's play including the final only costing €10 per person.
