• Jurys Inns to Sponsor England National Finals

The newly-opened Jurys Inn hotel in Sheffield is to sponsor the historic English Amateur Snooker Finals at the city’s World Snooker Academy later this month (23-24 May).

First played in 1916, the English Amateur Finals are the oldest matches in the snooker calendar. The Amateur Championship has produced a long line of famous champions, including Jimmy White and Nigel Bond. Past junior finalists include Mark Selby and 2005 World Champion Shaun Murphy.

Seven national titles will be determined over the weekend, including U14, U16 and U19; a senior title disputed by two former professional players; a 3-man team event and a club players’ final. Some 300 amateur snooker players competed for places in the Finals, including 80 juniors who took part in a series of regional tour events across the country. Now just 18 will compete for glory.

“We are delighted to be returning to the snooker city of Sheffield for the highlight of our season and to be associated with such a great hotel in the city centre as the Jurys Inn,” said Clive Brown, chairman of the English Association for Snooker & Billiards. “The facilities at the World Snooker Academy in the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield are world-class and to have such a modern official hotel for the event is great for all the finalists and the family and friends who will stay there,” he added.

Commenting on the sponsorship, the first by the new 259-room hotel, Jurys Inn Sheffield General Manager Carmel Murphy said: “Supporting the English Amateur Finals so soon after the success of the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield is a special privilege for Jurys Inn and we look forward to another great event and hosting some of the country’s most talented players at the hotel.”

As well as accommodation for the event and refreshments for the finalists, Jurys Inn is also offering a weekend break for the first player to make a 147 break.

Matches begin from 11:00 on Saturday and end with the final session of the Amateur Championship at 17:00 on Sunday. The finalists and matches are as follows, with the Amateur Championship and U19 finals on Sunday:
