By his own admittance it wasn't his best performance but Allister Carter got the job done.

"It's a win, I'm through, so I'm happy", said Carter after the match.

Carter, last year's beaten finalist, opened a 6-1 lead, largely on the back of unforced errors by his opponent.

But Greene battled back, closing to 6-4 down. It should have been 6-5 but he missed a golden opportunity.

The frame went to Carter and from there on it was one way traffic until Carter taxied over the line.

Looking to the future, Carter has trained as a pilot, but he hopes to put those plans on hold for at least ten years as his snoooker career blossoms.

'The Captain' will be back in action on Saturday for his round two match, where he'll play the winner of the game between Neil Robertson and Steve Davis.

.A third Essex player, after O'Sullivan and Carter, booked his place in round two as Mark King eventually won a long drawn-out match against Crucible debutant Rory McLeod.

The pair had trudged through six frames in their first session before the match was pulled off. And it was inevitably that they'd have to vacate the table again in their second session.

King carried a 9-5 lead into the late night extra session. He was briefly detained by McLeod, who made 65 and 54 to get back to 9-6.

Helped by fluking a snooker on the brown, King clinched victory on the pink to complete a 10-6 victory in a match that lasted 7 hours 27 minutes.

King won't know until Thursday who he plays as he awaits the outcome of the Maguire-Burnett clash.
