• Double disappointment for Wales in the Welsh Open

Mark Williams and Ryan Day were both bundled out of the 2010 totesport.com Welsh Open at the quarter final stage.

Scotland's Stephen Maguire produced one of his best displays of the season to crush Mark Williams 5-1 in front of a partisan crowd in Newport.

Maguire opened the match with 65 after Williams missed a long red attempt.

The Welshman bounced back to level with runs of 40 and 42.

However Williams found himself 3-1 down at the interval as Maguire slammed in 69 and 88.

Williams, watched by son Connor, who had been given the "big walk on" by Rob Walker before the match, opened the fifth frame with 46, but he broke down and left Maguire a chance, and he converted that into a frame winning break of 66.

There was a brief glimmer of hope for Williams in the sixth frame but it was soon snuffed out by Maguire, who fired in a run of 67 to secure a thoroughly efficient 5-1 win.

Ryan Day looked to be heading for a whitewash against Allister Carter. The defending champion didn't look in the mood to take prisoners tonight.

He made 69  in the first, 35 to close out the second, 81 in the third and went 4-0 up with a run of 42.

Day in his own words came out after the interval "and gave it his best shot". He got a rare chance and clawed back a frame with a run of 61.

He then closed out a low scoring sixth frame, to make the Welsh audience clutching at straws a little more hopeful.

But it was all too little too late and Carter thumped in a match winning 65 to secure his semi final place, where he'll face Stephen Maguire.
