• 1995 Welsh Open

Venue: Newport Centre. Sponsor: Regal. Winner: £32,500. Date: 22- 29 January 1995

Steve Davis’ successful defence of his Welsh Open title gave him the 70th major title of his career. The wry comment from Steve Davis after the match was “To be honest, at the age of 37, I should be past it.”

His final opponent, John Higgins, could count himself fortunate to reach that stage, having been 4-0 down to New Zealander Dene O’Kane, before recovering to win 5-4 in their Last 64 match.

There was high drama again in John Higgins’ quarter final against Ronnie O’Sullivan. In the ninth and deciding frame, Ronnie O’Sullivan scored an opening break of 68 before missing a red to the centre pocket, John Higgins cleared to win the match on the final black.

The first round saw 17 of the 32 seeded players losing their opening matches, amongst them James Wattana, who flew into the UK less than 24 hours before his match, having not practised during a month long holiday in his native Thailand. Stephen Lee defeated James Wattana 5-3.
