McGill wins PIOS Event 5
Scotland's Anthony McGill stormed to victory in the PIOS final beating Farakh Ajaib 6-0.
McGill came through a tough section of the draw, beating Belgium's Kevin Van Hove, former pro Stephen Craigie, before getting even with Alfie Burden.
Burden knocked McGill out at the quarter final stage of the IBSF World Championship last month, but this time McGill was equal to the task. He went on to edge out Jamie O'Neill in the semi finals, recovering from 3-1 down to win 5-4.
The final proved to be one way traffic as the gulf in experience was exposed.
"I let Alfie get on top of me in India, but I learned from that, and was match fit coming here, which really helped me."
But it was still a fairy tale event for 18 year old Farakh Ajaib from Accrington.
"This is definitely my best ever performance. I was pleased last year to get to the quarter finals of the Pontin's Festival Under 21s, but this week I've beaten much older and more experienced players."
Ajaib plays at the Elite Club, Preston, a club jointly owned by Stuart Pettman and Shokat Ali. And both the experienced professionals are regular practice partners.
It remains to be seen how keen Shokat will be to practice with young Ajaib in the future, having lost to him in this PIOS. A case of the pupil mastering the master.
McGill's win moves him up to fourth place in the PIOS Order of Merit.
Kettering's Kyren Wilson sneaks into eighth place after another good performance.
But now Wilson's attention is drawn to the skies. To celebrate his eighteenth birthday later this month Wilson is undertaking a sky dive in aid of the charity Just Giving. You can donate here www.justgiving.com.
