Williams and Swail hit for Six in Thailand
Mark Williams and Joe Swail slumped to opening day defeats as the 2009 Sangsom 6 Reds event opened in Bangkok.
Dave Harold inflicted a 5-2 defeat on Mark Williams in Group G, as the 8 groups of six players, including 32 current or former professionals, got play underway at the Montien Riverside Hotel in Bangkok.
The home fans were cheering as Issara Kachaiwong beat Joe Swail 5-3 in Group E. Swail will have some catching up to do now as both Joe Perry and Jimmy White, playing the same group, opening with easy wins.
Judd Trump was given a scare by Hong Kong's Fung Kwok Wai, before edging their Group A match 5-4.
Nobody has posted a 6-red maximum yet, which is 75 points, but veteran Darren Morgan, one of the EBSA European qualifiers, notched 53 during a 5-2 win over Thailand's Noppadol Sangnil.
Egypt's Mohammed Kayat cracked in 66 during a 5-1 win over Vietnam's Nguyen Nhat Thanh.
The best break of the day, so far, came from former Thai pro Phaitoon Phonbun, with a quick fire 71, which helped seal a 5-2 win, in Group A, over UAE's Mohammed Al Joker.
James Wattana was beaten 5-4 by India's Aditya Mehta, who cracked in 53 and 68 to recover from 4-1 down.
This year's winner will take home 1 million Baht, from a total prize fund of 3,720,000 Baht.
